A Photographic Archive of your Life and Work

About The Album2 Electronic Photographic Archive

In 1989 the University of Oslo Library launched a project called Conservation of and Access to the World Photographic Archive. The project has led to in-house development of a HyperCard/Macintosh based picture database (Media-Finder). From 8.000 old pictures, 3.500 unique photographs, drawings, and some watercolors were selected, identified, dated, classified, catalogued, described and digitized. (This English translation of the database covers 1.300 images.)
The originals have been cleaned, reposed and transferred to an appropriately controlled environment in a strongroom. Damaged photographs were registered for future restoration. The collection as a whole is now far less prone to further deterioration.

Search

Enter the word or phrase you wish to search for in the appropriate search box. It is possible to truncate words at any position (e.g. «ship», as in «craftsmanship», «shipmate», «ship»).
If one box is empty, will be selected all the records from that field. If you have an option which is not in the comboboxes options, select from its the option ***New event type*** or ***New object type*** and input the desired value in a popup window.
When a search is executed, the retrieval system will show the hits in short format. This format may consist of a thumbnail and some text, thumbnails only or text only. The user may choose the format (thumbnail and some text by default). The user may also decide how many hits are to be shown at a time (10 by default). This choice decides how many hits will be shown in short format for each request to the database. The choices should reflect the size of your screen, and the speed of transfer. From the short format, the user can go on to full format.

The Internet is an entity, which depends heavily on bandwidth. Bandwidth increasingly becomes an issue for Internet servers when large file downloads occur. When bandwidth becomes an issue your visitors become aware of it because your pages take longer to download, and depending on how heavy the bandwidth usage is at that moment they may get an error while attempting to load the page instead of seeing the page as you had intended. To combat this problem the servers will not support file sizes larger than 0.25 Megabytes. This is a file size that is large enough to still accommodate very large and colorful pictures, and reasonable sound files, but the primary advantage is that it keeps the wait time for your visitors at a minimum.

What is bandwidth you ask?
The term bandwidth refers to how much data can be sent during a specific amount of time. It is an issue on the Internet because web pages, and the contents that fill web pages, are considered to be data. How quickly that data can be found on the machine that holds it and then sent over the wires to your computer is important. No one wants to sit at a computer for an hour waiting for the information they were seeking to appear. This problem is an issue of bandwidth. There are few steps an Internet host can take to make a specific web site experience a better one. One of the steps that FreeServers does take is to speed up the overall access of all visitors to your web site by controlling the size of files. This way no one is impacted by extra long waits while a data download is taking up the available bandwidth.
